Bioluminescent Bay Tours

Puerto Rico Bioluminescent Bay Tours

bioluminescent bay puerto ricoOne of the most unique and memorable tours you can take in Puerto Rico is to visit one of the islands three bioluminesent bays.  Closest to Rincon is the the bioluminescent bay off of the coast of La Parguera.  La Parguera is a small fishing village on the Southwest corner of Puerto Rico and is part of the town of Lajas.  If you are staying in San Juan, the most convenient bay to visit is the Laguna Grande in Fajardo. The luminescent effect in the bay is the result of a permanent population of tiny micro-organisms called Dinoflagellates.  These animals produce a chemical spark of light when disturbed in the water.  They can produce striking effects of green and white sparkles that can only be seen at night….and no, don’t worry – it’s not radioactive!

Tour Option 1: Sunset Snorkel & Bio-Bay at La Parguera

Rincon PR Snorkel Tours This trip includes a boat ride with time to snorkle picturesque reef in the clear blue water for a couple hours before sunset. You’ll enjoy great snorkeling where the shallow waters will hide sea cucumbers, sea fans, starfish and tons of reef fish.  Take a short break and relax on the boat as you watch the sunset and eat homemade empanadillas, dip in the water and down a tasty medalla beer or soda. After the sun goes down, you’ll then head out on a 20 minute boat ride to the bioluminescent bay when you can experience the luminescence for about 30 – 45 minutes. It’s sure to be a one-of-a-kind experience and one you’ll not soon forget!

Once you reach the bay you’ll have 30 – 45 minutes to swim and snorkel before you return to shore.  All snorkel gear and dinner is included.

  11. Roni says:

do you know who operates tours on Vieques? what is the price? is it worth the overnight trip to the island?

    • RinconVacations says:

      Hi Roni,
We don’t book in Vieques, but I have been told that the best person to go with is Gary from Vieques Adventure Company – http://viequesadventures.com/ they have clear kayaks that you can use which sounds super cool! If you have the time on your trip I always recommend a trip to Vieques or Culebra – it will take some time to get there but it is so beautiful. Good luck!

Hi there, had a few questions :) on the 4 hour tour, can you swim in the bio bay? We are 15 of us that is going,do you ofer group discount? what is your prices for children and how far in advance do we need to do reservations? thanks

    • RinconVacations says:

      Hi Brenda,
yes on the 4 hour tour you get to swim in the bay as well. For a group of 15 we may be able to do a discount, we will need to check with our provider. Children are normal price just because they count as a full spot on the boat (but under 2 they will do for free). For 15 I would recommend a week or so in advance. Feel free to call us with anything else. Thanks!

    Thank you!
    Jessica

    • RinconVacations says:

Hi Jessica – The biobay tours do have minimums, but this is for the total group, not per booking. So, if you’re a little flexible, we should be able to get you out on a night htat has at least two other people booked, no problem. Feel free to call us to book anytime. Thanks!

  16. Kimberly Vargas says:

Will be staying in San Juan August 16 and leaving the 20th. I am not familair with the transportation and ferry options. I have looked at other comapanies that host this activity, and they suggest to stay the night near by, why is that? Could you suggest the best way to and from ? It will be for a group of 4 adults.
Please feel free to send any other information needed before we book.

    Thnaks

    • It sounds like you might be asking about how to get to the biobay on the island of Vieques – which does require a ferry ride. The tours we offer near San Juan are in the Fajardo biobay (puerto rico has 3 bays so it can be confusing!) which is just about 45 minutes from San Juan. The ferry to Vieques can be difficult to catch which is why they may recommend staying near the dock the night before. If you would like to book Fajardo, we can reserve for you – we just recommend booking at least a week in advance. Thanks!

  24. Melissa Walker says:

We are a family of 5 coming to Puerto Rico first week of Aug (1-7). 2 nights in San Juan and 4 in Rincon. Which bio-bay tour would be best for us? Wanted to swim if it is still allowed.

    • Hi – if you want to swim and you will be staying in the West in Rincon, the tour at La Parguera would be best. There is no swimming allowed now in the Fajardo tour. Let us know whe you would like to book – thanks!!

  25. Gillianoyola says:

Hi! I’m very interested in this tour the only problem is that we are staying in luquillo and I can’t find any website with similar tours. Can you please recommend any close to Luquillo? Thanks:)

    • Hi – the Laguna Grande/Fajardo biobay tour is really close to Luquillo – only about 15 minutes away. It would be very easy for you to get there. Let us know if you have any other questions – thanks!

  27. Kathryn says:

Hi- how far in advanced do we need to reserve our trip?

  28. Gina says:

    Thanks

  35. jessica says:

I have looked into all the bio bay tours, when I was in PR in August 2010, the one near fajardo said you coulnd’t swim in it and our tour to the one on vieques didn’t work with our schedule and at that time people in our hotel said they could swim in that one. I just recently heard of this one and was wondering if you can swim in the La Parguera one? By the looks of these comments it seems that you can but I just wanted to check for sure. Can you email me back with that info?

  36. Tim says:

We are going to visit San Juan and fajado during this thanksgiving, wonder if the tour is still on. If yes, Does the snorkeling gear included? Thanks!

  37. Carlie McCall says:

    Hi,
I will be visiting there next week with family members, a group of about 10 of us. We are staying in Culebra, is this close to us? Or is there a closer tour to Culebra? If not, how long would it take us to get here? We read from some other sites that not all of the bioluminescent bays are allowing swimming, is that true? Thanks!

  38. Edna says:

Hi. I will be in PR for Thanksgiving. We are interested in doing the. $30 tour. Can you send me info and availability for. the Sat. and Sun. following.

  39. Anne says:

Hey! My boyfriend and I are traveling to San Juan this week (Dec 12-16 2012) and are wondering if there’s another couple going that would like to partake in Option 1 with us, in order to meet the 4 person minimum?

    Let us know!

  40. Jeff says:

    Hello,

I will be in Rincon with my family over Christmas and New Years and was wondering if there are packages that include transportation to and from either of the bay’s for this tour. Thank you

  41. Tom Barlow says:

Will be in San Juan in January. Family of five looking into tour and more information. Probably going for 2hr tour.

    • Hi – please feel free to call with any specific questions, I would reccommend the Laguna Grande tour for you (Fajardo), it is closest to San Juan. This tour books up fast though, so please call at least a week in advance of your vacation. Thanks!

  42. Lynn says:

What’s our best bet? Staying in Rincon right after Christmas 2012, group of 4, good swimmers but don’t want to snorkel at night, just ride in a boat and sight-see. Can we take a boat ride and observe the night lights? Any chance for a shuttle from Rincon or do we have to drive back and forth? If Yes to a shuttle availability, what’s the cost for 4 people?

    thanks!
    L

    • Hi Lynn,
We can arrange shuttles, but if you have the option I would suggest driving yourself. Shuttle is about $175 flat for 1 – 7 people. You are welcome to do just the biobay tour ($30) and if you feel comfortable you can get in the water, if not, you can just sit in the boat and observe – the guides can bring some water in a bucket for you to see the luminescence. Please give us a call to book – Thanks!

  43. Juliann says:

Have a group of 17, we are interested in taking you tour on Saturday January 19. Soume tours offer discounts for groups, do you? Do you have any motor boats or kayaks only?

    Thanks,

    Yenyen

  45. Abby Trantina says:

My Fiancé and I are honeymooning in San Juan in May 2013 and are very interested in your Laguna Grande Tour at Fajardo. It says in the details that you need a minimum of 4 people, does that just mean that you need at least another 2 people to book the tour separately from us, or we have to have a party of four, if so, we can’t go? We would want to book it as much as advance as possible as we won’t have much time on email leading up to the wedding/right after the wedding to email and get the info for the tour.

    Thanks,
    Abby

Not sure whether to do a boat ride or a kayak or do Vieques, Lajas or Fajardo. We are from NE next door to CO in the states and this is our first time in PR. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Can you send me some information such as tour time, departure time, cost, location of the tour, pick up/drop off information?

    Thank you!

    hello,

I am looking to do the bio bay tour. I have heard that you can’t swim in the bio bay. Are you allowed to swim in the bio bay on this tour? Also, I will be staying in San Juan and I hear there are different bay tours. Is there a location that is better than another one? I wouldn’t mind traveling to a further location if one of the bay tours is a lot better than another tour.

    What do you recommend?

    Thank you

I would love to have this planed by the time we get there so it can just be a surprise birthday gift. Thanks for any information you can provide!
