Summer is upon us and even that means warmer weather, calmer waves and great conditions for SUP standup paddleboarding. Any time of year you can enjoy time out on a SUP board, thanks to the fact that Rincon has calm South beaches; but during the summer, the conditions are prime. You can often paddle all the way from Villa Cofresi in Corcega up around Tres Palmas and all the way to the lighthouse or Puntas beaches. The water will be so clear you’ll be able to see the bottom, not to mention sea turtles, fishes and if you’re lucky maybe a manatee or dolphin.

These days many SUP boards are getting mounts for bungee cords on their large front noses, which makes it perfect to bring out snorkel gear or a fishing pole for a day enjoying the sun on the water. SUP paddleboarding is a great workout (not to mention a peak way to get a tan!) and is a fun way to enjoy the water with out the stress of traditional surfing. Any level of surfer or swimmer can try stand-up paddleboarding in Rincon and do it successfully.

Pack light
You’ll drive your car to a meeting point where the guides will pick you up. After you leave your car, everything you bring will need to be on your back because you’ll be ziplining and hiking with it. So you’ll want a really small, lightweight backpack. Ok, so, now read that again: really SMALL, BACK pack. Don’t bring a beach bag or purse that will be on one shoulder because that will not work for ziplining. If you have multiple people in your group I would just bring one small pack and you can trade on and off amongst the group. You might want to toss a hat or light rainjacket in the pack, but I wouldn’t worry about bringing much more than that. Hit yourself up with the sunscreen and bug spray before you depart on the tour (although you’ll be in the shade most of the time and in our experience the bugs aren’t as bad as you might imagine). You’ll probably be wet when you end the tour, but that’s what the change of clothes in the car is for.

Water
Bring a small bottle of water along because you’ll be sure to get a little thirsty. No drinks or snacks are included, so if you have a small pack you can throw in a granola bar or something light to snack on, but plan on getting lunch after the trip, rather than during it. No need to bring an Italian sub along. There won’t be any real lunch stops, although you’ll stop at a couple of fresh water springs along the way with crisp, clear drinking water – so you can refill your bottle or just sip from the spring.

Cameras & Phones
You’ll need a neckstrap or big pockets for your camera because you’ll be using both your hands for the zipline. If you have a waterproof case for your camera, I highly recommend bringing it, because, again, you’re going to be hiking in and around the river and depending on water levels you might get pretty wet. It would be a shame to loose all those vacation pics because the camera got dropped in the river! I know that we might have to pry the iPhone out of your hands, but seriously, leave it in the car where it will be safe and sound. Cell reception is bad in the mountains and the odds of dropping it from huge heights or into water are high. Trust me on this.

Leave the GPS at home
I can’t say it enough but please, whatever you do, don’t trust GPS systems while you’re in Puerto Rico! We provide really detailed directions to where you are headed and if you follow the directions you’ll find everything just fine. I understand that the directions may sound funny at times (turn at the big mango tree or the purple house), but trust us, with no “real” addresses, a lack of street signs and overall craziness on the roads, your best bet is just to follow what we give you. The guests that get lost are invariably the ones that try to program their car GPS to head to the location and they end up in the middle of timbuktu. That said, Google Maps tends to be pretty darn good, so if you do get lost, you might be able to navigate around a bit if you have a Google Maps app on your phone. We find that they do a pretty good job even in Western Puerto Rio or the mountains.

Best Spring Break Nightlife in Rincon

You can’t really say ‘spring break in Rincon’ without mentioning the infamous Rock Bottom at Casa Verde bar. This happening night spot is a nub of activity during spreak break and is your ‘straight from the movies’ surfer bar. Tans, blonde hair, beers, rum and music – that’s what you’ll get at Casa Verde in March – until about 4 am! The crowd here is young, so be prepared – 18 – 20 something for the most part. Locals, part-time locals and visitors all hit up Casa Verde when they really want to get their drink on and the late night schedule keeps them there long after the rest of the party places shut down. Casa Verde can get packed, but the new upstairs deck gives a lot more space for seating and, since it is Puerto Rico afterall, people are sure to spill out into the streets.

A fixture in Rincon since the 1970′s is the Tamboo Beach Bar. Tamboo is a favorite of Puerto Rican locals, mainland visitors and anyone else who is in Rincon PR for a good time. During the day you can relax with a bite of lunch on the newly rebuilt Tamboo deck (big swell distroyed the deck last winter but it’s finally back!), or catch the ocean breeze with dinner. But, after the sun goes down get ready for DJ’s, live music, dancing and drinks! Tamboo will fill up fast around 11:00 pm, especially if there’s a special event going on. Tamboo is not to be missed if you’re visiting. The crowd stays really local and ranges from mid-20′s to mid 30′s – a little older than Casa Verde, but that’s not saying much! It’s still got a fun, young vibe, but no one will feel out of place!

Other hot spots for nightlife near Rincon? Check out 4 Aces Beach Bar and Bar Code in Aguada or the Atlantic Beach Bar. For sunset Calypso at Marias and Villa Cofresi are staples. Black Eagle Restaurant has been hosting a number of special drink nights after the restaurant crowd departs and their beachfront location is only rivaled by Tamboo. Joe Bar at Nautico is a local favorite that few visitors know about (look just to the left of Taino Divers at the Marina and that is Club Nautico).

Regardless of where you end up, it’s hard to have a bad time for spring break in Rincon. You’re sure to return bronzed and happy (although you might need a day of rest to catch up from all that dancing!)

One of the best new events in Rincon is the fast growing Rincon International Film Festival. This year the festival will be held April 10 – 15, 2012. Films will be showcased in venues across the town of Rincon Puerto Rico, from beachfront inns to boutique resorts. This year the Rincon plaza will host a special outdoor event with a live orchestra for what is sure to be the most memorable showing in Rincon Film history.

This small festival has grown from a locally sourced event to one of the biggest draws of the season in Rincon. This Puerto Rican film festival celebrates small film makers and Puerto Rican talent. The Rincon Film Festival uses the natural beauty of the Rincon area to show films outdoors under the stars with the palm trees blowing – a natural and beautiful atmosphere that enhances the viewing experience.

The Rincon Film Festival connects local Puerto Rican filmmakers and talent with Hollywood professionals, giving them a chance to network that they might not otherwise have. The local Rincon inns and hotels that sponsor the event provide lodging and accommodations for these up-and-coming filmmakers that might not otherwise be able to afford coming to a film festival.

Although we are focused on being the experts for the West Coast of Puerto Rico, we do offer a few high demand excursions on the East of the island. One of the most popular trips that we added because of such high demand is our new Laguna Grande Bioluminescent Bay kayak tour out of Fajardo. This is a great tour and we are so excited to have it on our site now!

For guests who are staying in or around San Juan, Fajardo is the most convenient bio-bay. Driving time from San Juan is about 45 – 1 hour depending on traffic. If you are coming from Rincon or the West Coast of the island, plan on at least 3.5 – 4 hours to get to Fajardo (it is essentially as FAR away from Rincon as you can get!). But, many of our guests who spend their trip in Rincon do stop in San Juan for a night on the way in or out, so this is a great option if you have already been to the bay in La Parguera or if you want to explore while you are in the East.

This trip launches kayaks out of the Las Croabas dock in Fajardo. They are sit-upon kayaks, so you stay out of the water, but you may get just a little bit wet. An informative guide will lead you on an easy paddle out to the bay – winding through mangrove tunnels along the way. Although both tours are great, if you want to see a little extra sea life, you can head out on the early tour (6:00 or 6:30 depending on season) you’re sure to be greeted by numerous iguanas, sea birds and other fish life as you paddle out to the lagoon. (There is also an 8:30/9:00 departure time if you prefer to reach the lagoon a little later in the eve).

You’ll pass through a mangrove tunnel single file and into the larger bio-lagoon under the guidance of your guide. As you enter the lagoon you’ll be able to see how the bioluminescence lights up your paddle and the fish below. Bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico are one of the most magical things on the island and we are so lucky to have THREE natural bays in Puerto Rico alone!

Your guide can answer any and all questions about the natural phenomenon of the bioluminescence in Puerto Rico as well as give guidance on how this unique eco-system is created and how we can help preserve it. The Laguna Grande bio-bay kayak trip is a great option for families, as children 6 and up can paddle with an adult. The waters are calm and warm and it is a peaceful overall experience.

It is best to visit any bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico when the moon is at it’s lowest point (if you have a choice in dates). So we always suggest checking the lunar calendar before you depart. But, not to worry – if you can only go on a day when the moon is close to full, you’ll still see the luminescence and it’s still a one-of-a-kind experience that you can only get in Puerto Rico!
